K-12 Behavior Specialist
The K-12 Behavior Specialist provides continuous support to the overall educational environment by implementing behavior intervention strategies for all students, across settings including classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, gymnasium, and during extracurricular activities. The Behavior Specialist serves as part of the educational team, offering interventions and consultation for students with behavioral challenges throughout the K-12 regular and special education programs.
Responsibilities:
- Behavior Intervention and Support:
- Work with students one-on-one or in small groups to ensure a safe, supportive, and positive environment.
- Promote positive behavior interventions for “at-risk” students, focusing on explicit, intensive, and accelerated instruction.
- Assist staff in defining and measuring behavior, understanding reinforcement principles, teaching new behaviors, and implementing strategies to reduce undesirable behaviors.
- Identify antecedents and support staff in implementing effective behavioral strategies.
- Consultation and Collaboration:
- Facilitate team meetings with students’ teachers and parents to complete Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA).
- Design and implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and support classroom organization, instruction, and social skills development.
- Engage parents in the intervention process, providing them with strategies to support their child’s behavior development.
- Serve as a consultant to administrators, teachers, and parents, offering guidance and support on student behavior.
- Data and Assessment:
- Use ongoing assessments to maintain records of student progress, developing strategies that align with instructional goals and individual needs.
- Assist teams in collecting data for evaluations and reevaluations, maintaining accurate and confidential records.
- Participate as an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team member, interpreting evaluation results and providing recommendations.
- Professional Development and Training:
- Provide professional development for staff, focusing on positive behavior support strategies, research-based practices, and modeling instructional techniques.
- Train school staff working with students with behavioral needs, ensuring adherence to federal and state laws and district policies.
- Coordination and Communication:
- Work cooperatively with building administrators, outside agencies, healthcare professionals, and counselors to better serve student needs.
- Act as a liaison and LEA representative with outside placements, coordinating with administration and counselors.
- Participate in building-level or grade-level meetings and serve on district committees as requested.
- Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution:
- Conduct conflict resolution and peer mediation sessions.
- Provide crisis intervention as needed, supporting staff and students during challenging situations.
- Other Duties:
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Special Education Director and Assistant Directors.
- Maintain open lines of communication with all stakeholders, including administrators, staff, parents, and students.

Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in School Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Special Education, or a related field preferred.
- Experience working with students with behavioral needs in a K-12 setting.
- Knowledge of Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBA), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP), and positive behavior support strategies.
- Strong understanding of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

The District works with Substitute Teacher Service, and does not employ its own substitute teachers and substitute paraprofessionals.

If you hold a Pennsylvania public educator certificate or a professional level out of state educator certificate you may be eligible to become a day to day substitute.
If you do not hold the proper certification, but have a conferred bachelor’s degree, you may be eligible to serve as a substitute.
Pennsylvania educators with inactive certificates may substitute for up to a total of 180 days per school year.
Requirements for a day to day substitute:
- Valid Pennsylvania educator certificate, out of state certificate, OR Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalency)
- Background clearances
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident alien status
Day-to-day substitute teachers will be paid at the rate of $135 per day
Certified short term leave substitute teachers will be paid at the rate of $150 per day
