Important Information About SNAP Benefits

Starting September 1, 2025, and expanding further on November 1, 2025, new work and eligibility rules for SNAP (formerly food stamps) will affect many families. These include:

  • Requirement that most adults aged 18–54 (without young children) must work 80 hours/month or qualify for an exemption, or risk losing benefits

  • As of November, rules widen to ages 18–64 in certain households, and both parents must meet new standards in two-parent families

  • Changes in how utility costs count may reduce some households’ benefit amounts

  • Some legal immigrants will no longer qualify (though U.S. citizen children remain eligible)

There are exemptions (age, pregnancy, disability, student status, caring for young children, etc.), and individuals may apply for exemptions or medical documentation to protect benefits.

If your household may be affected, act promptly:
